Ammo Manufacturers for Sporting Use
The ammunition you shoot with is often just as important as the gun you shoot with, and when you’re in a high stakes target shooting competition, or a cowboy exhibition, or you’re hunting large exotic game, you need every shot to count. There are several companies in the United States today that specialize in ammunition for these activities, including the legendary Remington Company, the renowned Hornady Manufacturing, and the innovative newcomer CORBON-Glaser. These three companies all bring something special to the world of ammunition, and provide the cartridges needed to help the people in these situations get the job done.
Casual shooters might not think about it very often, but the ammunition that you use while shooting can be just as important as the firearm you’re shooting with. This is especially true if you’re target shooting in a competition or hunting for big game – some activity where missing a shot has a real negative impact. These specialized activities require ammo that’s different from practice ammo and different from ammo intended for self defense.
There are a number of companies around today who make ammunition for hunters and competitive target shooters; let’s take a look at some of them. Remington Arms (http://www.remington.com/) is one of the largest manufacturers of ammunition in the United States, in addition to their very large rifle manufacturing operations. The company was originally founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington II, who started his company with the purpose of constructing a superior rifle. Superior rifles need superior ammunition to be effective, and so Remington moved into the ammunition business. They merged with the Union Metallic Cartridge Company in Bridgeport, CT, and set up an ammunition factory. In the 1940s Remington joined into a partnership with the United States Military to manufacture ammunition for the US Army. Their entire ammunition manufacturing business has since been moved to a plant in Arkansas.
Hornady Manufacturing Company (http://www.hornady.com/) is located in Grand Island, Nebraska, and specializes in ammo for hunting and target shooters. It’s a family company, started by founder Joyce Hornandy and now run by his son Steve. The company has won awards for their ammunition, and has become well known for small rounds intended for hunting very small game, or ‘varmints’. They are especially noted for their .17 caliber round, an extremely small round but well-suited for its small-game hunting purpose. They have also innovated hunting ammunition by incorporating polymers into their bullet tips, increasing distance, power, and accuracy compared to standard hunting rounds.
CORBON-Glaser (http://www.dakotaammo.net/) is another well-respected manufacturer of sport shooting ammunition in the United States. They make numerous hunting rounds and even rounds specially intended for exhibition shooting such as cowboy competitions. They are well-known for their Pow-R-Ball ammunition, which uses polymer balls in their ammunition tips to enhance the power of each shot. They are based in Sturgis, South Dakota, and were formed in 1982.
There are many other manufacturers of ammunition in America who supply target shooters, exhibition shooters, hunters, and other sports shooters with the ammo they need to get the job done. Without the right ammo, these high stakes competitions and hunting expeditions may be lost.
